Five Years of Octoco
Lessons, Moments, and the Road Ahead

This March marked a significant milestone for Octoco: five years since Heinrich and G-J founded the company with a clear vision to fill a critical gap in the market by providing experienced CTO services for ambitious businesses. What started as a focused offering has evolved into something far greater, a comprehensive technology development company serving clients across more than 12 industries, with a footprint extending from South Africa to international markets.
As we celebrate this anniversary, we're filled with immense gratitude for the clients who have trusted us with their technology challenges, the partners who have collaborated with us to create innovative solutions, and most importantly, the exceptional team members who bring their talents, passion, and dedication to Octoco every single day. Our journey from a startup to an established technology company with 70+ team members has been filled with growth, learning, and building that continues to shape who we are.
Five Lessons We've Learnt
Reflecting on the past five years, certain insights have had a profound impact on how we approach our work. These lessons weren't learnt from textbooks; they emerged from real client partnerships, complex technology challenges, and the experience of scaling a business in a rapidly changing industry.
Technology evolves at lightning speed. This reality has taught us to build flexible solutions and maintain a culture of continuous learning. Our team must stay ahead of the curve to provide genuine value to clients navigating the same rapid change.
A strong start doesn't guarantee success, but a weak one makes it far less likely. We've learnt to invest heavily in getting things right from the beginning, knowing it creates momentum that carries through the entire engagement.
What works when you're just starting a company often stops working as you scale. We've had to deliberately evolve our processes, structures, and systems whilst preserving the entrepreneurial spirit that made us successful.
Being generalists can be a competitive advantage. Our ability to work across hardware, software, and strategic CTO support sets us apart. Clients don't have siloed problems; they have complex challenges that require integrated thinking.
Build a team of smart, curious people who easily get bored. People who get bored with routine work thrive on the complex, varied challenges we tackle. Their restlessness drives innovation and pushes us to take on increasingly ambitious projects.
Five of Our Proudest Moments
Choosing only five standout moments from five years of growth isn't easy. But certain moments rise above, not just for what we achieved but for how they defined us as a company.
Making our first cash investment into LeaseSurance marked a significant evolution in our business model, signalling that we were willing to back our strategic advice with real investment.
Our first hardware investment, Henlo Coffee, successfully implemented at the Simple Bru coffee shop in Melkbosstrand, demonstrated that our hardware engineering capabilities could deliver tangible, real-world products.
The first time we stepped in and successfully delivered a project that larger companies couldn't resolve validated our approach. Sometimes what's needed is the right combination of technical depth, creative thinking, and determination.
Seeing genuine friendships forming in the Octoco team might not seem like a business milestone, but creating an environment where people genuinely enjoy each other's company makes everything else possible.
Hosting the Shark Tank event in 2024 and seeing the Stellenbosch tech ecosystem growing reminded us that contributing to the ecosystem that supports us is part of our responsibility as an established player in the local tech scene.
Five Core Qualities That People at Octoco Share
At the heart of Octoco's success is our team. As we've grown from five to over 70 team members, we've identified certain qualities that consistently shine through in the people who thrive here.
They thrive on complex challenges. The more complex the problem, the more engaged our team becomes. Simple, straightforward problems don't excite them.
They are driven by technological innovation. Our team members are genuinely passionate about technology, following industry trends and constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
They are dedicated to high-quality work. There's a shared commitment to excellence that runs through the team. This dedication to quality shows up in code reviews, design iterations, and client deliverables.
They focus on successful execution. Our team understands the difference between interesting technical concepts and solutions that actually work in the real world.
They are curious and self-motivated. We don't have to push our team members to learn or improve. They come with an internal drive to grow, explore, and master new skills.
Five Reasons We Love What We Do
Beyond the qualities our team shares, there's something deeper that makes people genuinely excited to come to work each morning.
We get to work across different industries and solve problems on a global scale. The variety keeps things endlessly interesting, exposing us to diverse challenges and preventing monotony.
We have people who bring energy and excitement to every project. The enthusiasm our team brings is infectious, creating a positive culture that emerges naturally from hiring people who genuinely love what they do.
We are "techies" at heart, always pushing boundaries in the tech world. At our core, we're engineers and builders who get excited about elegant code, innovative hardware designs, and cutting-edge technology.
We bring different disciplines together, building fully integrated solutions. Rather than handing off between siloed teams, we collaborate across disciplines, resulting in more cohesive and effective outcomes.
Each day feels like a new opportunity to innovate and build with purpose. We're not maintaining legacy systems; we're building new things, solving novel problems, and creating technology that makes a real difference.
Five Things We Hope to See in Our Future
As we wrap up this reflection on five years of Octoco, we're looking ahead to what the next five years might bring. Our vision of becoming Africa's leading technology development company drives us forward and shapes our aspirations.
Our early-stage ventures flourish and surpass the success already achieved with Octoco. We're building a portfolio of ventures that we believe can become significant players in their respective markets.
Expanding the Octoco Group into the USA and Canada. This expansion will expose us to new challenges, larger projects, and different market dynamics that will make us stronger.
Opportunities to get involved in larger and more complex projects. We want to continue taking on increasingly ambitious initiatives that push our capabilities and deliver transformational outcomes for clients.
The launch of Octoco AI. We're particularly excited about this upcoming addition to our service offerings. Our AI department is already taking shape behind the scenes, and we'll be sharing more information soon.
Octoco becoming the best technology development company in Africa. This isn't just about size or revenue; it's about being recognised for the quality of our work, the strength of our team, and the impact we have on our clients' success.
Looking Forward
Five years feels simultaneously like a long time and no time at all. We've achieved things that seemed impossibly ambitious when we started, yet we're only beginning to scratch the surface of what's possible. The technology landscape will continue evolving at breathtaking speed, bringing new challenges and opportunities we can't yet imagine.
What won't change is our commitment to engineering excellence, our dedication to our clients, and our belief in building a team of exceptional people who love what they do. These foundations have served us well for five years, and they'll continue guiding us through whatever the next five years bring.
To everyone who has been part of this journey, whether as a client, partner, team member, or supporter, thank you. Here's to the next chapter of Octoco's story.
