A New Chapter for Octoco
James de Villiers Steps Into CEO Role
As of 1 March, James de Villiers has officially stepped into the role of CEO at Octoco - marking an important milestone in the company’s journey.
For those familiar with Octoco’s growth over the years, this transition feels like a natural progression. What began as a small group of people with a shared passion for building technology and businesses has evolved into a strong, capable team trusted with complex work across industries. That growth has been shaped by steady leadership, high standards, and a team that genuinely cares about the work they put into the world.
James has played a key role in building that foundation. During his time as CTO, he worked at the intersection of engineering and real-world application - navigating architecture, trade-offs, and constraints, while ensuring that technical decisions aligned with what businesses need to survive and grow. It’s an approach that has consistently underpinned how Octoco delivers value.
Stepping into the CEO role does not mark a departure from that thinking, but rather an expansion of it.
“It’s the same problem at a different scope: how do you take something technically complex and make it work in the real world, at the right time, for the right reasons?”
This perspective reflects a core belief at Octoco: great technology on its own is not enough. It needs to be grounded in strong business thinking to create something that truly works.
What changes now is the scale of that focus. Beyond delivering individual projects, the ambition is to continue raising the standard of technology development - and to strengthen how South Africa shows up as a technology partner on a global stage.
At the same time, Heinrich de Lange remains closely involved, leading the broader Octoco Group strategy and continuing to drive innovation across the portfolio of businesses. Together, this reflects the depth of leadership that has developed within Octoco over time.
This transition formalises what has already been true in practice, while setting the direction for the next phase of growth.
A new title, certainly - but more importantly, a continued commitment to building technology that works, in the real world, for the right reasons.
